University of The Incarnate Word
School of Osteopathic Medicine
ONE COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION PLATFORM
About
The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM), located in San Antonio, Texas, admitted their first class of 162 students in July of 2017. UIWSOM’s mission is “to empower all members of the medical education community to achieve academic, professional and personal success and develop a commitment to lifelong learning through excellence in learner–centered, patient-focused education, justice-based research and meaningful partnerships of osteopathic clinical service across the spectrum of undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education.”
The Challenge
In January 2016, UIWSOM contacted AllofE in search of a single solution platform to manage and track curriculum and student information across all four years of undergraduate medical education. They selected eMedley as their platform with all seven constituent application modules.
The Solution
eKeeper was the first application implemented to manage key data elements related to faculty, students, clinical sites, and preceptors. AllofE built a custom preceptor application form that UIWSOM connected to their web site to make completing the application quick and easy for preceptors. This data would then show up in eKeeper without the need for the school to manually enter it, also saving the school tremendous amounts of time.
Next came eCurriculum to assist with curriculum management and mapping. In anticipation of the students starting in 2017, the school had a well-defined curriculum structure and execution plan. Their innovative and integrated curriculum stresses self-directed learning, which was tracked with program-level education objectives throughout the curriculum units.
To measure student learning, UIWSOM implemented ExamN to administer both formative and summative assessments. Students regularly perform self-assessments to track their own academic progress. Summative assessments are then used to evaluate learning for each curriculum unit.
The school implemented eduCATE as their learning management system. This is where students have centralized access to everything they need to know about a course including the curriculum calendar, assignments, tests, evaluations, attendance, and grades.
For the clinical clerkships, the school implemented eMedley’s clinical tracking applications for scheduling, logging experience, and filling evaluations. eduCATE’s schedule planner lays out the clerkship schedule and tracks the capacity and availability of sites. Students use eCLAS to enter time logs and case logs. Finally, eValuate is used to assess student performance in the clerkship setting.
Moving Forward
The inaugural class is slated to graduate in May of 2021. Having used eMedley from day-one, the school will have a complete history of what these students learned, curriculum covered, assessments administered, and overall student performance on all tests and performance based evaluations.
