Charles R. Drew University
The Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing(MMDSON)
About
The Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing, located in Los Angeles, California, has graduated over 1000 nursing professionals, including over 600 family nurse practitioners, since their opening in 2010. Charles R. Drew University(CDU) opened their nursing school, The MMDSON, to address the growing demand for nurses who can provide healthcare in South Los Angeles and similar communities across the nation. The South Los Angeles area surrounding CDU has the highest concentration of racial/ethnic minorities and is the most socioeconomically disadvantaged community in Los Angeles County. This statistic explains why the community has a scarcity of healthcare resources, why The MMDSON promotes nursing careers in underserved communities. Later on in 2017, The MMDSON received a 10 year CCNE accreditation, and continues to grow and be a successful nursing program. Enrollment currently stands at more than 400 students in all the nursing programs.
The Challenge
The School of Nursing was searching for a software to be implemented for all their nursing programs including different tracks of BSN, MSN, and DNP programs. Since all of these programs have different curriculums of different complexities, a platform was needed that had advanced functionality but that was also highly customizable and user-friendly. The main needs of The MMDSON were clinical tracking, evaluations, scheduling and documentation management. The school of nursing chose eMedley’s highly intuitive and comprehensive platform for health science programs. The growing number of students enrolled at The MMDSON needed an application implemented by the eMedley team that was secure and efficient to store an abundance of all types of important information including immunizations, certifications, general information, etc.
The Solution: Implementing eValuate
The School of Nursing implemented eKeeper, eCLAS, eduSched, and eValuate.
eKeeper was implemented to offer The MMDSON a centralized location for all important documents needed for preceptors, students, and faculty. eKeeper is extremely secure and efficient for documentation management, and it is the ideal solution for nursing programs. The application contains everything from immunization records to affiliation agreements with external sites.
eCLAS was implemented so The MMDSON could have a central location for all their students to easily log their clinical experience and hours. An important feature The MMDSON wanted to customize was an area for customized SOAP Note documentation for the review of systems and physical examination that the nursing students were examining. Report templates were also made available by the eMedley team so instructors and preceptors could have a better understanding and visual representation of what the students were learning during their clinical rotations.
eduSched was implemented by the eMedley team to assist with scheduling students to clinical rotations. The eMedley team worked with the MMDSON to ensure that available clinical rotations remained up-to-date. The user-friendly interfaces offer students, faculty, and preceptors all a view of their individual schedules. When implementing eduSched, the eMedley team worked with The MMDSON to set up a customized solution that would streamline the clinical scheduling process for administrators.
eValuate was implemented for administering comprehensive evaluations. The eMedley team built eValuation forms based on the school’s needs. Clinical Evaluations could also be customized by The MMDSON in order to specifically fit their program needs. Many different types of evaluations were implemented including evaluations such as preceptor evaluating students, faculty evaluating students, and students evaluating preceptors.
Customizing the Solution
With each eMedley implementation, AllofE is able to cater to unique program needs by implementing custom functionality. The eMedley team worked with The Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing to complete many customizations, including the following:
- Add a custom report that shows user logins date including: Username, First Name, Last Name, Account (Faculty/Student), SRC IP Address, Page Visited, Time On Page, Timestamp
- Create ability to extend academic years when necessary
- Redirect incorrectly placed case logs for students
- Create custom tabs in Case Logs for tracking SOAP Notes for Review of Systems and Physical Examination
Moving Forward
As the School of Nursing continues to engage students in nursing research and high-quality education that emphasizes the health status of underserved communities, AllofE and the School of Nursing at Charles R. Drew University looks forward to continuing their partnership to support their education program needs with eMedley.
